Helpful tips for out-of-towners

PublIc transport

The New York Subway is a great way to get around Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the other boroughs. The Path is the Subway that connects Manhattan and New Jersey. For both, you can either get a ticket (Metro Card) at a kiosk inside the station, or you can just use Apple Pay / Google Pay by tapping your phone directly at the turnstile!

taxis

The New York City Yellow Cabs are of course iconic (you can hail a cab by standing at the side of the street and raising your hand), but if you’d like a cheaper option just use Uber or Lyft.

TIpping

In the U.S., tipping at restaurants, bars, etc.  is very important, as many employees receive a lower salary because the tips are factored into their pay. A 20% tip is customary, and anything less than 15% is considered offensive.

id/passport

Always have an ID and/or passport on you, since ID checks at bars may be stricter than they are in Europe. People under the age of 21 are not allowed to sit at a bar, even if they don’t drink alcohol.

rEservation wait times

If you don’t have a reservation, some of the popular restaurants may have long wait times between 30 min to 2 hours. We like to either put our names down and get a drink at the restaurant bar while we wait, or we just have our whole meal at the bar, which usually has less of a wait.

How to say “Hi” in the U.S.

Person A: “Hi, how are you”, Person B: “Good, how are you”, Person A: “Good thanks”. Now that you’ve said hi, you can start your conversation!

The art of ordering a bagel in New York

Egg Sandwich

[Meat type], “Egg” & “Cheese” on a [Toasted or Untoasted] + [Bagel Type].

Examples

Jonathan’s order: bacon, egg, & cheese on a toasted everything bagel.

Open Tab

If you go to a bar, you can “open a tab” with your credit card. This means you’ll leave the credit card behind the bar for as long as you’re ordering drinks and you just pay once at the end. The bartender may ask you if you want to “keep the tab open” or if you want to “close it out”, which means you pay immediately and take your card back. Yes, leaving your credit card behind a bar is considered a safe practice and yes, people sometimes forget about their cards and leave without paying… Jonathan and Julia would have never met if it wasn’t for an open tab at the bar!
